Y8 released!

2 June 2025 was a “happy dance” day for all – including the original caretaker of Y8 (and the other Osprey hacked at Elk Rock State Park), SOAR friend Marla, Kay Neumann, and Jenni, the executive director of Iowa Bird Rehabilitation.

Y8 was released at Walnut Woods State Park, West Des Moines, Iowa, which is very near the cell tower where her nest has been. Ground observers scouted the location ahead of time and confirmed that there was still one Osprey in the area and no active nest. All involved are hoping the one Osprey is Y8’s mate.

Close-up of Y8, the USGS band is on her left leg and the project band (says Y8) is on the right leg that Kay is touching with her bare hand.
