Many Admits and Carp
Every year there are times of the year that seem busy! The last two weeks have been just that…
In the last two weeks, SOAR has admitted 25 non-eagle raptors — an average of 2 admits each day.
- 6 Red-tailed Hawks
- 5 Great Horned Owls
- 5 Cooper’s Hawks
- 5 American Kestrels
- 2 Barred Owls
- 1 Screech Owl
- 1 Mississippi Kite
…PLUS 2 Bald Eagles.
Each admit is in SOAR’s intensive care area and will be checked for major injuries, checked for feather damage and parasites, have their eyesight evaluated. Fractures will be stabilized, cleaned, and wrapped. Any open wounds cleaned. Each patient will receive food and hydration appropriate for their condition.
In addition to the patients in ICU, SOAR picked up a pick-up truck load of carp from a nearby lake that help a “carp festival” to encourage anglers to fish for carp and remove this invasive species from the lake. SOAR is often the beneficiary of the invasive carp!
Fresh carp will be fed to the eagles in rehab and the remainder will be frozen for future use.
