Dallas County Conservation staff rescued this rough-legged hawk. Injuries to the right wing suggest that this hawk may have had an “encounter” with a barbed wire fence.
A rough-legged hawk is unique in that the feathers on the legs go all the way down to where the toes start. Rough-legged hawks visit Iowa in the winter.
